My Life Lesson on Contentment

Updated: Aug 24, 2021

Question: After all we have been through, have we yet learned how to be content?

Merriam-Webster’s definition of contentment is “having a mental state of acceptance that is drawn from being at ease in one’s situation…” The Apostle Paul is a great example of someone who developed a spirit of contentment. Paul was a God-fearing man who had been through a LOT. But through it all, he was able to develop a spirit of contentment. How was Paul able to go through being talked about, lied on by his cronies (friends) and was beaten and left for dead? How was Paul able to survive the hardship of being without food, water and overcoming a deadly sickness without becoming a “complainer”? Could it be that he put his confidence in God instead of the things of the world? Paul said, “I have learned how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little” (Philp. 4:12). What was the “secret”? “I can do all things through Christ, who gives me strength” (Philp.4:13). Whoop…there it is! It is through Christ and Christ alone that allows us to develop a spirit of contentment. Many of us can testify that in the last 3 years, we have lost and suffered a lot of things. But if we absolutely love the Lord, at the end of our list, we will write; “Lord, I have learned to be content in whatsoever state I am.” I love the words I heard my dear sister-friend say after her “content-experience”, she said, “I’m Better Than Most.” Listen, I know we are in a trouble-phase right now. Things are not looking too good. I know you feel like every time you get past one thing, something else pop up. Today I encourage you to allow the spirit of Christ to refocus your heart. Allow Him to readjust your perspective and value system. I have learned that at the end of the day, no matter what come my way, Christ is the only thing that will remain unchanged and unmovable. So, anchor yourself in God’s word. Latch on to God’s unchanging hands as He propel you into a spirit of contentment.
